There are three ways of living life on earth:
1. Live a life of success
2. Live a life of selfishness
3. Live a life of significance
This was shared by Bo Sanchez in today’s Feast and I want to share the same with you and add my own reflections on it.
But before we proceed to discuss this three ways of living life, let me share to you the definition of success and significance as Bro. Bo defines it simply.
Success is achieving your dreams.
Significance is helping others achieve their dreams.
That says it all, right?
Now, we go back to the three ways of living life.
First: to live a life success.
Living a life of success is filling your barns.
Living a life of success is achieving your dreams.
The fact the God planted dreams in our hearts, it is His invitation for us to fulfill these dreams.
But is this enough? Before we answer that, let’s take a look at the second way.
Second: to live a life of selfishness.
Living a life of selfishness is also living a life of success but there is a difference.
Living a life of selfishness is living a life of success but it stops there.
It is filling your barns, period! No more. It ends here.
We are not called to this way of living.
Jesus told this parable (Luke 12: 16-21):
“There was once a rich man who had land which bore good crops. He began to think to himself, ‘I don’t have a place to keep all my crops. What can I do? This is what I will do,’ he told himself; ‘I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, where I will store the grains and all my other goods. Then I will say to myself, Lucky man! You have all the good things you need for many years. Take life easy, eat, drink, and enjoy yourself!’ But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night you will have to give up your life; then who will get all these things you have kept for yourself?’
And Jesus concluded, ‘This is how it is with those who pile up riches for themselves but are not rich in God’s sight.’”
Mark 8:36 went on to say, “What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world but loses his soul?”
For this reason that we are called to live the third way:
Third: to live a life of significance.
Living a life of significance is helping others achieve their dreams.
But of course, before you can help others achieve their dreams, you have to achieve your dreams first.
Helping others achieve is saying, “Come here.” It is not saying, “Go there.”
But this does not mean that you have to wait to be super, mega successful before you start helping others.
You can start helping others one dream at a time.
When you achieved Dream A, go on and pursue Dream B. But while pursuing Dream B, it is your turn to look back and help others who still haven’t achieved Dream A. You don’t need to achieve Dreams A to Z before helping other achieve their Dream A.
You can start helping others one step at a time.
You don’t need to wait to be a multi-millionaire before helping others in their financial dreams. I don’t need to have millions before I start sharing the nuggets of financial wisdom I learned and started to apply to grow my finances.
Let me take the example of Bro. Bo.
He used to be a poor missionary and all his preaching were all about spirituality. But when he got married and realized that he needed money to support his family, and that he does not have to be poor to help the poor, in fact, he needed to be rich for him to help other people more.
But his advocate of teaching financial freedom did not take an instant leap into where it is right now.
He did it one step at a time.
The moment he learned and started saving, that was the time he wrote his book “Simplify and Create Abundance,” a quasi-financial book.
The moment he learned and started investing in bonds and mutual funds, that was the time he started teaching the “8 Secrets of the Truly Rich.”
The moment he learned and started investing in the stock market, that was the time he started teaching the “Habits of a Happy Millionaire.” And further onto his other books, My Maids Invest in the Stock Market and why you should too, Prosper, and The Turtle Always Wins – How to make millions in the stock market. He also founded the Truly Rich Club to help people gain spiritual and financial abundance at the same time.
This is just an example. You can have your own version. You can have your own composition. It is yours to take. It is yours to create.
Again, you can help others one dream at a time.
You can live a life of significance one step at a time.
Lloyd Reeb says, “Success is great. But significance is lasting.”
Stephen Covey said that you are to find your voice and help others to find theirs.
This is living real success – living a life of significance.
It is so huge! It seems overwhelming. But don’t be.
You and I can do it one step at a time – one little step at a time.
So keep on achieving your dreams then help others achieve theirs.
In your own little ways, how can you do this?
Think about it. Then do it.
Live your life, young mind!
PS: Visit a Feast near you. I attend The Feast, a Catholic prayer meeting of the Light of Jesus Family, held every Sunday at the Philippine International Convention Center. It starts with a solemn mass, then wonderful worship, and finally a powerful preaching from Bro. Bo Sanchez. There are 4 sessions: one each at 8AM, 9:30AM, and 10:45AM, and then at 3:45PM with Bro. Alvin Barcelona.
